News Round-Up: February 25

In times of austerity it’s always good to make a fortune on something you’ve found laying around. A man from South Wales managed that after discovering a rusty old MG in the Borneo jungle, bringing it home, restoring it to its former glory and 42 years on, selling it for £20,000.

Engineer Michael Standen found the rusting shell of a car, a 1954 MG TF 1500cc, and took on the very slow process of restoring it, after removing all the snakes and spiders from it.

Standen, 66, told the Metro: “I didn’t know how it got there but it seemed such a waste of a piece of British motoring history.

“My intention was to drive it back to the UK, but the job finished before the car was ready.

“So I shipped the car back in a container and finished the job.”

One-legged woman given ticket

A woman in Wales wasn’t quite as lucky as she was given a ticket for parking in a disabled bay, despite only having one leg.

Sylvia Taylor, 67, had forgotten her disabled permit but showed the parking attendant her false limb hoping that would be proof enough but was still given a £70 fine.

She told the Mirror: “I explained but I thought he didn’t believe me.

“So I rolled up my trouser leg to show him my false limb – there was no arguing with that. He wouldn’t cancel it but told us to write to head office to explain.” Car park bosses told her she must pay up but later cancelled the fine after she wrote a letter to appeal.

A spokeswoman for Euro Car Parks, who runs the site said: “If you forget the badge, alternative parking should be sought.”

Vote for UK’s top garage

The top 50 repair centres have been announced, as voted for by thousands of motorists.

Watchdog for the motor trade, Motor Codes, has made up a shortlist of garages for the Golden Garage award, the winner of which will be announced in April.

Yahoo! reported that the top 50 garages are separated into regions of the UK, and drivers are now being asked to vote again to whittle down a top 10.

The winner will receive a £12,000 and will be awarded to the garage deemed the most professional, offering good, honest work and excellent customer service.

A survey in 2012 by Motor Codes found that 45% of drivers felt they'd been ripped off by a garage at least once - some of them by up £500 or more.

The full list of nominated garages can be found on Yahoo!.
